Ronaldo sale: Star worth more than his weight in gold

GIVEN his determination to depart Manchester United, the fans always knew Cristiano Ronaldo was no Golden Balls.
But as it was confirmed that the Portuguese former world player of the year was saying ‘adios’ to Old Trafford yesterday, an Irish gold recycling company has worked out that given his outlandish €94m price tag, he is actually 57 times dearer in person than his weight in gold.
Galway-based ForgottenGold.com calculated that at yesterday’s market price on the London Bullion Market for 24-carat gold, 11.8-stone Ronaldo would fetch a mere €1.638m.
That price must raise the question of whether the Real Madrid staff at the Bernabeu have scored a bit of an own-goal with the pay-out – they have already agreed to pay €68m for the Brazilian star Kaka.
According to reports in the Spanish media on the pre-contract with the footballer, Ronaldo will earn a staggering €9.4 million a year or €181,000 a week after tax with Real Madrid for the six seasons he has signed for with Real Madrid. The only catch is that he will have to sign away 40% of his image rights to his new club.
The deal even assures the star’s agent Jorge Mendes, €9.4 million from the deal. Another clause has been stitched in, according to La Razon, will see a €30 million penalty clause for either party pulling out of the deal.
Its not surprising that the deal would be complex given Ronaldo’s penchant for ducking and diving.
News that the player is finally going brings to an end a saga that has been ongoing for three summers.
For some die-hard fans the player is a hero who they will miss as if he was a member of their family. For others his whinging has grated and they will be delighted to give him the golden boot.
Last night it also emerged that Ronaldo could make his debut for Real Madrid against Shamrock Rovers.
